Lea-Ann S Kirkham

Dr Kirkham is an NHMRC Career Development Fellow at the University of Western Australia. Her research focus is on development of improved vaccine formulations for protection against paediatric respiratory infections, particularly pneumococcal and Haemophilus influenzae diseases. She has a PhD in infectious disease microbiology from Glasgow University (conferred 2006). Her PhD research resulted in her role as co-inventor on 3 international patents for a novel pneumococcal vaccine antigen. Her recent research in Australia on influenza vaccine adverse events and ear disease aetiology has directly translated to changes in national vaccine policy. In 2012, Dr Kirkham received the Western Australian Young Tall Poppy Award from the Australian Institute of Policy and Science in recognition of her research achievements and excellence in community engagement.
