Makrina Totsika

Associate Professor Makrina Totsika is a Vice-Chancellor’s Senior Research Fellow and Group Leader at the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation, Queensland University of Technology. Originally from Greece, Makrina completed her PhD in bacterial genetics at the University of Edinburgh before moving to Australia in 2007. Her recent ARC DECRA and current VC's Research Fellowship are at the forefront of novel anti-virulence therapies, which are promising to provide effective and superior therapeutics for common bacterial infections that are no longer treatable with antibiotics. Makrina is a frequent science communicator and was named QLD’s Young Tall Poppy of the Year in 2016. She was the winner of the 2016 QLD Senior Researcher Award by the Australian Society for Medical Research and this year’s winner of the Frank Fenner award by the Australian Society for Microbiology.
